University of the Visayas Chorale
The UV Chorale was founded in 1999 by the university's executive vice-president, Dr. Jose R. Gullas in order to give full scholarships to vocally and musically-gifted students.
Originally, this was a choir for singing in church masses and university-related activities. However, after receiving expert training from Anna Piquero, a Philippine Madrigal singer, they went onto win first
runner up in the Busan Competition and gold in the Tomohon International Choral Competition in Indonesia in 2007. They also had the honor of being the only Filipino performance group selected for World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney, Australia. The UV Chorale also won the first-ever Cultural Center of the Philippines Choral Competition in 2009. And they were the champions of the Paskong Pinoy National Choral Competition in both 2009 and 2011.
In addition, through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the UV Chorale acquired an Ani ng Dangal Award in 2010 and received it again in 2016. In 2012, they served as the first Cebuano chorale group to compete in Europe, winning 3 gold medals in the Rimini International Choral Competition in Italy and a bronze award in the Tolosa International Choral Competition in Spain.
The UV Chorale won first in the Folk Song Category and second in the Chamber Category during the Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Competition in 2015. With hard work, passion, and the right training, this choral group offers every member the chance to grow and pursue their dreams full of self-confidence. Currently, the group is managed by Dr. Gullas' wife, Nena.

Anytime, Anywhere Cebuanos are always singing
Cebu Music Learning Center
Women commuting in a Jeepney, taxi drivers waiting for customers, cleaning staff and guards, businessmen on their lunch break, bangka boat drivers... Everyone is always singing a song to themselves. While singing, there are staff operating the register at supermarkets or convenience store, or customer service staff demonstrating the karaoke at an electronics store, etc... But no one's to blame. Rather, they're hard-working.
At the same time, there are charming orchestras performing in shopping malls or music events, beautiful piano melodies in hotel entrances and restaurants, captivating chorus harmonies during parties, etc. no matter where you go is perfection.
In the many churches in Cebu City, like Santo Niño, there is no lack of hymns. You could say that when music-loving Cebuanos met the Christian Church, it began Cebu's singing culture.
It's not just a simple love of music but there is also a definite sense of stability with high music education. It's the power of expression, enough to move the audience. Experiencing Cebu's singing culture is one more way to understand Cebu itself.
Many song contests and many choruses of beautiful harmonies!
Every year on December 31st in Japan, NHK televises the Red & White Year-end Song Festival nationwide. The “International Red-White Singing Festival” was formed in 2011 based on this and it has garnered support from different public corporations. Year by year, the excitement for this event grows. This year may be the most anticipated one as the competition will be held outside of Japan for the first time - in Cebu!
In Cebu, together with others during Sinulog Season, “the Cebu Pop Music Festival” has been held for many years in January, in dedication to Santo Niño. Recently, there's also a “the Vis Pop Music Festival” for original songs in Visayan.
People from the Visayas have always loved music. With them, maybe we'll see the fusion of their hymns and western music.
For the last 400 years, hymns have been sung in Cebu and throughout this long history, that has hardly wavered. The University of the Visayas Chorale, the University of San Carlos Choristers, the Cebu Chamber Singers, etc., have delivered beautiful harmonies to the city.
